Brief History:
Jean Grey was the only child of John and Elaine Grey. Her father was a doctor, her mother was a socialite. They doted on their daughter, and she was a happy girl, making friends easily, and she always excelled at her schoolwork. Her powers manifested at an early age, after a car accident that killed her best friend. Soon after Jean was found by Charles Xavier, who began training her to control her powers. She was terrified of her telepathy, and a large portion of it was repressed for her own good.
She eventually joined the X-men, becoming the first female student at Xavier's Institute. She enjoyed the attention, even when the boys infuriated her, and flirted a little with Warren, though they were never serious. A friendship between her and Scott blossomed, and over the years the two became closer and closer. In fact, when Jean left the X-men to peruse a modeling career and college, Scott went with her, pretending to be her boyfriend.
Though life was never idyllic after she joined the X-men, these times are the rare golden compared to the next step in her history. After rejoining the X-men, she 'dies' in an accident in space. This opens a can of worms that changes her life forever.
While she was dead, Scott married Madelyn Prior, and had a son named Nathan.
She was sent to the bottom of New York harbor by the Phoenix Force to heal, while untold atrocities were committed with her name and face. When she emerged, she joined X-factor with her original team mates. She defeats Madelyn as the woman (driven insane by goblins), tries to sacrifice Nathan to bring Limbo to the earth.
Much later, after lots of other stuff, Scott and Jean are married, welcoming Rachel into their lives. Their honeymoon is spent raising Nathan in the future, and upon her return Jean starts using the codename Phoenix.
Lots and lots of crazy adventures follow this. Alternate universe children come and go (and come back to life and die etc.) New team members come and go as well. Jean finds herself headmistress of the Xavier Institute. Scott is thought to be dead after the Twelve saga, where he merges with Apocalypse. When he is found alive, their relationship is at odds, not only because of the stress and Scott's issues post possession, the Phoenix is starting to manifest itself in her again.
Scott seeks out marital counseling from Emma Frost to help him with his issues, and this leads to an affair. Jean uses the Phoenix powers to tear through Emma's mind for evidence of their betrayal. Emma is later shattered by one of the Cuckoos, and Jean fuses the pieces together, realizing that Emma truly did love Scott, and that the other woman has something important to offer him.
Later, Jean and Wolverine are being propelled into the sun. Wolverine stabs Jean to save her the pain of that kind of death, and she manifests the Phoenix in full force. This saves her, though soon after she is murdered by Xorn who fed her incredible amounts of electro-magnetic energy.
She returns to earth several years later.
